Pros

  • Comprehensive coverage
  • Customizable pricing
  • Virtual vet consultations covered
  • Discounts for veterans and adopted pets

Cons

  • May be more expensive than other insurers
  • 15-day wait to claim accidents & injuries

Fetch covers a really wide range of treatments and therapies in comparison to most competitors. A particularly useful addition to its coverage is virtual vet consultations. If you’re conscious of cost, you can customize your premium cost by changing the deductible and reimbursement, and you may be eligible for a discount in certain circumstances, e.g. if you’re a veteran or your pet is rescued.

Fetch gives fairly low average prices, however, when obtaining quotes for four pets, the prices were higher than some other insurers out there. You may also find the waiting period (up to 15 days) a bit longer than other companies offer.

What’s Covered?

If you take out a policy, your pet is covered against:

  • Treatment for injuries
  • Treatment for illnesses
  • Sick visit exam fees
  • Dental care for every tooth, injury and disease in every tooth and gum
  • Breed-specific issues
  • Alternative and holistic care
  • Emergency vet treatment at any clinic in the US or Canada
  • Specialist treatment
  • Diagnostic tests
  • Overnight hospital stays
  • Physical therapy
  • Behavioral therapy
  • Virtual vet visits
  • Any non-prescription medicinal substance, including but not limited to nutraceuticals, vitamins and herbal medicines, that a veterinarian recommends for the treatment of an injury or illness
  • Boarding for your pet if you’re in the hospital
  • Advertising and reward for lost pets

Fetch has very comprehensive coverage compared to most other pet insurance providers. In addition to covering treatment for accidents and illnesses, it also offers complete dental coverage (for every tooth, unlike other companies, which may only cover the canine teeth), some breed-specific issues, specialist treatment (e.g. orthopedic or orthodontic care), and health supplements recommended by your vet.

What’s Not Covered

If you take out a plan, the following exclusions will apply:

Pre-existing conditions

Routine or preventative care

Prescription food

Claims made more than 90 days after treatment

Insurance Plans & Pricing

Fetch doesn’t have different plans, but its coverage is fully customizable in terms of coverage limit, deductible, and reimbursement. For this review, we requested quotes* for four different pets, all aged 6 years and based in California. We set the coverage limit to $10,000, the deductible to $500, and the reimbursement to 80%.

Pet

Monthly premium

Pedigree dog (Labrador)

$233.59

Mixed-breed dog

$170.99

Pedigree cat (American shorthair)

$74.17

Mixed-breed cat

$66.59

*These quotes were obtained in July 2022 and may be subject to change. Your zip code may also affect the amount you pay for coverage.

While your quoted prices may be different depending on your pet’s age and location, it’s worth noting that the above quotes were far in excess of the averages promoted on the Fetch homepage ($35/month for dogs and $25/month for cats). There’s also no discount for insuring multiple pets with Fetch.

Reimbursements & Deductibles

You can customize your monthly premium payments by adjusting your deductible and reimbursement. You can also set your annual deductible (the point beyond which you will be reimbursed) as $300, $500, or $700. Increasing the deductible will reduce your premium payments.

You can also set your reimbursement amount at 70%, 80%, or 90%; increasing it will increase your premium payments.

Benefit Limits

When you purchase your plan, you can select a maximum annual coverage limit of $5,000, $10,000, or $15,000. Customized options are available through the call center.

Waiting Periods

There’s a waiting period of up to 15 days before you can claim for an accident or injury. Hip and knee injuries have a six-month waiting period, although a vet check within the first 30 days of your policy can waive the knee injury waiting period.

Claims and Service

You can quickly and easily submit a claim through the Fetch app or website. You need to submit an invoice from your vet (paid in full), and detailed medical records from your pet’s most recent check-up, so Fetch can check what’s eligible for coverage. Claims should be processed within 15 days.

Fetch has 24/7 support available from its interactive chatbot, but to speak to a live operator, you’ll need to use the chat during the hours of Monday-Friday 8am-8pm EST or Saturday 10am-6.30pm. Phone support is available Monday-Friday 9am-6pm EST, and emails should be answered within one working day.

The Fetch site is very helpful and has lots of details to support you in choosing, setting up, and making claims with your pet insurance. We’re really impressed by The Dig, Fetch’s comprehensive blog covering all things pets. Getting a quote on the website just takes a couple of minutes.

What Pet Parents Might Like

Fetch offers $1,000 a year to consult virtual vets by text, email, call, or video. This can really give you peace of mind, especially if you’re a busy pet parent without much time for in-person appointments.

Plus, Fetch uses their unique Fetch Forward technology to analyze all the data they gather about our pets. This helps them shape insights and recommendations that they’ll send you to help you keep your pet happy and healthy.

Something To Consider

Fetch has slightly longer waiting periods than some other insurers, especially considering it’s an equal length for both accidents and illnesses. It’s also worth noting the requirement to submit detailed medical records when you claim; this could add a significant amount of time to the process.

To Sum Up

The breadth of Fetch’s coverage is impressive. It goes above and beyond what most pet insurers offer, including things like full dental coverage, specialist treatment, and even virtual vet visits. Fetch also does a great job of educating pet owners with a really comprehensive website and the helpful insights provided by its Fetch Forward technology. Although the prices quoted were higher than many other insurers, there’s a huge amount on offer here. Fetch could be a great choice for insuring your pet for all of the possibilities.
