Pros

  • Visit any licensed vet in the US or Canada
  • 24/7 vet helpline
  • 10% multi-pet discount
  • Single annual deductible

Cons

  • Claims may take up to 30 days to process

Enabling you to visit any licensed vet in the US or Canada, ASPCA Pet Health Insurance also provides a 10% multi-pet discount and only charges one deductible per year. Its full-service app makes it easy to manage your account.

According to the ASPCA Pet Health Insurance website, it can take up to 30 days to process claims, which is a longer period than with some other providers. Furthermore, it only covers dogs and cats, so you will need to look elsewhere if you have other pets.

What’s Covered?

If you take out a policy, your pet is covered against:

● Accidents

● Injuries and emergencies related to accidents (such as torn ligaments, bite wounds, cuts, broken bones, swallowed objects and toxic ingestions)

● Services related to accidents (such as X-rays, MRI, ultrasounds, bloodwork, sutures, medications, hospitalization and surgery)

● Illnesses (such as cancer, arthritis, hypothyroidism, ear infections, digestive problems, and urinary tract infections)

● Hereditary and Congenital conditions (including heart disease, intervertebral disk disease, eye disorders and hip dysplasia)

● Alternative therapies (acupuncture, physiotherapy, chiropractic care, rehabilitative therapy, hydrotherapy and low-level laser therapy)

● Behavioral Issues (diagnosing and treating behavioral issues, such as excessive licking, fur pulling, pacing, destructive chewing and more)

● Chronic conditions

● Prescription medication

● Prescription food & supplements (when used to help treat a covered condition)

● Microchip implantation

One feature I particularly like about ASPCA Pet Health Insurance is that it also gives you the option to customize your insurance with preventative coverage for:

● Vaccines

● Dental cleanings

● Flea and tick medication

● Heartworm

● Preventative medicine

● and more (full list available at https://www.aspcapetinsurance.com/research-and-compare/pet-insurance-basics/preventive-care/ )

What’s Not Covered?

If you take out a plan, the following exclusions will apply:

● Tail docking

● Ear cropping

● Claw removal

● Pregnancy and breeding costs

● Preventative healthcare (unless you add-on a preventative plan)

Like most providers, the company doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions. Note, however, that it will not consider a condition as pre-existing if your pet has been without symptoms or hasn’t received treatment for 180 days (with the exception of knee and ligament conditions).

Insurance Plans & Pricing

You can choose between the following plan types:

Complete Coverage : covers exam fees, diagnostic and treatment costs for accidents, illnesses, hereditary conditions, behavioral issues, chronic conditions, prescription medication, alternative therapies, and more.

Accident only : covers exam fees, diagnostic and treatment costs for accidents

Preventative (optional add-on to your plan) : covers wellness treatments designed to keep your pet healthy, such as an annual exam, spay/neuter, dental cleaning, heartworm/flea prevention and more.

As with any pet insurance provider, the cost of your premiums will depend on your pet’s age, breed, and location.

When entering the details of a three-year-old female golden retriever dog with a New York zip code, we received a quote of $83 per month for Complete Coverage. This assumed a $4,000 annual limit, an 80% reimbursement rate, and a $250 annual deductible.

Entering the details of a three-year-old male mixed-breed cat with a New York zip code we received a quote of $13.70 per month for accident-only coverage. This assumed a $3,000 annual limit, a 70% reimbursement rate, and a $500 deductible.

*These quotes were obtained in July 2022 and may be subject to change. Your zip code may also affect the amount you pay for coverage.

If you add another pet to your policy, you’ll receive a 10% multi-pet discount. You can also add preventative coverage to your plan for $9.95 per month.

Reimbursements & Deductibles

When you take out a policy, you can select the amount of your deductible, which is the amount you pay per year towards any claims you make. You can set this at $100, $250, or $500. You’ll only need to pay this once per year, regardless of the number of claims you make.

In my opinion, this is a great feature as it can result in significant savings if you make multiple claims. The higher you set your deductible, the lower your premiums are likely to be.

You can also select the amount of your reimbursement rate, which is the percentage of your claim’s value your insurer will repay. You can choose from rates of 70%, 80%, or 90%.

If you have signed up for direct deposits, ASPCA Pet Health Insurance will transfer your funds directly into your bank account. Otherwise, it will make your reimbursements via check.

Benefit Limits

You can set your annual benefit limit at varying amounts, starting at $2,000 going all the way to unlimited. For more options than what is listed online, you can call 1-888-716-1203.

Waiting Periods

If you take out a base plan, your coverage will begin 15 days after your policy start date. If you add on the optional preventative care plan, coverage for that begins immediately.

Claims and Service

You can make a claim through the company’s member center, via their app, email, fax, or mail. You’ll need to complete a claim form, which is available online. You’ll also need to provide a copy of your pet’s medical history and an invoice from your vet. ASPCA Pet Health Insurance states that it will generally complete claims within 30 days.

Should you have any concerns over your pet’s health, you can contact ASPCA Pet Health Insurance via its dedicated 24/7 pet helpline, which is available over the phone. Although you can’t receive a diagnosis through this service, the staff can provide you with information to help you make decisions about your pet’s health.

If you have a more general query about your account, you can also contact the company over the phone. Hours are Monday to Friday, 8am-8pm ET.

Another thing that I like about the ASPCA Pet Health Insurance program is that you can manage your account through an app. Available to download from Google Play or the Apple App Store, the app enables you to file new claims, track existing claims, and find nearby vets.

Overall, the website is user-friendly, and I was impressed by its use of jargon-free language and the ability to quickly and easily obtain my quotes.

What Pet Parents Might Like

One feature I particularly like is that the ASPCA Pet Health Insurance Program offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. During this period, you can get a full refund on your plan provided that you haven’t made any claims. And unlike some of its competitors, the company charges its deductibles on an annual basis, rather than per incident. This means that you’ll only need to pay this amount once per year, regardless of the number of claims you make.

If you have more than one pet, the company offers a 10% multi-pet discount for each additional animal that you ensure.

Something To Consider

The ASPCA Pet Health Insurance program doesn’t currently offer its preventative care coverage as a standalone plan. This is a great feature, and it would be useful if you buy it individually, rather than offering it as an add-on to your existing insurance plan.

To Sum Up

If you’d like the reassurance of working with a veteran company and leader in the pet insurance industry, the ASPCA Pet Health Insurance program could be an excellent option for dog and cat insurance. As well as providing 24/7 vet health support, it offers several great money-saving features, such as 10% multi-pet discounts and one-off annual deductibles.
