It’s worth noting that the limits for some treatments, especially wellness treatments, are on the low side, which could catch you out if your pet needs a lot of them. Furthermore, Pets Best doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions, which may exclude some pets from being eligible for insurance.
If you take out a policy, your pet is covered against:
Pets Best offers fairly comprehensive coverage, not only covering the cost of treatment for accidents and illnesses, but also cancer treatments, emergency care, prescription medications, and even prosthetic devices. You are covered for treatment by any licensed vet, emergency clinic (including out-of-hours), and specialist, so you don’t need to choose someone from any specific practice or network.
One thing we like about the Pets Best coverage is that there’s no age limit, so older pets can still benefit from this pretty broad insurance. Pets also don’t need to be spayed/neutered. Another benefit is that chronic illnesses are covered—if they start within the term of your policy, and you then renew.
If you take out a plan, the following exclusions will apply:
When you take out a plan with Pets Best, you can choose between Accident and Illness combined coverage or Accident only. As a pet owner, this is a great option, especially if you’re on a budget and want to keep your costs down.
When it comes to the Accident and Illness plans, the Essential plan covers accidents, illnesses, cancer treatment, hereditary conditions, emergency care, surgery, and prescription medications. The Plus plan adds cover for diagnostic tests, and the Elite Plan contains everything mentioned, plus rehabilitative, acupuncture, and chiropractic coverage.
Another great aspect of the Pets Best coverage is you can customize your premium payments by selecting your preferred annual cover limit, annual deductible, and reimbursement level (the money you’ll get back on each vet bill).
We requested quotes for pedigree and non-pedigree cats and dogs, aged 6 years, and based in California with no known conditions. (*Your quoted price may vary depending on your pet’s details and location.) We set my annual limit to $5,000, my annual deductible to $500, and my reimbursement to 80%.

You can also add 2 optional wellness plans with no deductibles:
BestWellness from around $26 per month
EssentialWellness for around $16 per month.
Pets Best offers wellness plans in addition to their core accident and illness coverage to help budget for your pet's expected vet bills, vaccinations, deworming, microchipping, spay/neuter, and more!
As mentioned, you can customize your reimbursement and deductible. The reimbursement is the amount you’ll get back from each vet’s bill, and you can choose 70, 80, or 90%. Choosing a higher reimbursement will make your monthly premium higher. The annual deductible is what you’ll pay in addition to the copayment (which can’t be adjusted). You can select $50-$1,000. Choosing a higher deductible will lower your monthly premium. An annual deductible can also be preferable to a per-procedure deductible if you think you’ll need to claim often.
You can choose a $5,000 annual limit or an unlimited annual limit. The latter option is more expensive, but knowing you won’t need to break the bank if your pet needs a lot of care could give you more peace of mind.
You’ll need to wait 3 days before claiming for an accident, 14 days for illness, and 6 months before claiming for ligament conditions.
You can file a claim directly through Pets Best’s online portal, which is a handy feature that’s sure to save you time and energy. This enables you to check the status of your claim and request for direct payment to your vet. You can email, fax, or mail your claims form if you'd rather use a more conventional method. You’ll need to include your original invoices and proof of payment for treatment.
If you need support, there’s an informative blog and a helpful FAQ on the site. You can also get in touch with Pets Best by phone Monday-Friday 6am-7pm MT or Saturday 6am-2pm MT.
It’s pretty quick to get a quote through the Pets Best website and easy to edit your pet’s details and toggle between plan options. The website is packed with knowledge and is also easy to navigate.
The best thing about Pets Best insurance is how comprehensive it is. With periodontal work, prosthetic devices, and cancer treatment included, Pets Best insurance will give you plenty of peace of mind. It’s also great that there’s no age limit or requirement for spaying/neutering. This makes Pets Best an inclusive insurance suitable for lots of cats and dogs.
Pets Best also offers a 24/7 vet hotline, with no limits on usage. This means you can contact a professional at any time, if needed.
Although the Pets Best wellness plans can be a useful addition to your insurance, their treatment limits may not cover everything your pet needs. For example, the limit for spaying/neutering is $150, but this procedure can cost upwards of $200. Whether this is a problem for you will depend on the age and circumstances of your pet. A younger pet may need more ‘wellness’ treatment in their early years.
Pets Best doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions, and this can leave you out of pocket if your pet has a recurring issue.
