Many pet insurance companies place upper limits on how much of your annual limit you can use towards a specific condition. Spot does not do this: you have complete freedom to bill Spot for any eligible expense within your yearly limit. Spot offers customer service with weekday extended hours to 8pm EST. Spot offers coverage to pets of any age as long as they are at least 8 weeks old. It also covers conditions that happened before coverage began, as long as the pet has been treated for that condition and symptoms did not recur in the last 180 days.

Some Spot customers report long customer service wait times. The claims process is also lengthy, sometimes lasting as long as 2-4 weeks.

What’s Covered?

If you take out a policy, your pet is covered against:

  • Annual veterinary expenses up to the limit you chose
  • Surgery and hospitalization costs,
  • Tooth extractions
  • Cancer treatments,
  • Treatment for behavior problems (if administered by a vet)
  • Microchip implantation
  • Dental treatment for conditions that result from an illness
  • Spot will also cover alternative therapy, end-of-life expenses, stem cell therapy, MRIs, CT Scans, X-rays, and prescription medication and supplements.

In addition to its main package, Spot offers two optional add-ons, the Gold and Platinum care packages, for $9.95/mo and $24.95/mo, respectively. (As of June 2022)

  • These packages cover certain types of care not covered by the standard package, such as vaccination, dental cleanings, and spaying (Platinum only).

What’s Not Covered

If you take out a plan, the following exclusions will apply:

  • Aesthetic, cosmetic, or elective procedures
  • Expenses related to breeding and pregnancy
  • Clinical trials
  • Herbs
  • Non-prescription baths
  • Shampoos
  • Supplements
  • Prescription food
  • Preventative care
  • Any expenses that result from organized fighting or law enforcement activities conducted by your pet

Spot will generally not cover conditions that existed before your coverage began. However, if your pet was cured of an illness and remained without symptoms for at least 180 days, Spot will not consider it a pre-existing condition and will extend coverage if that condition recurs.

Insurance Plans & Pricing

Spot offers two plans: Accident + Illness and Accident Only. With Accident Only coverage, Spot will not cover veterinary or other expenses listed above if they are the direct result of an illness.

Reimbursements & Deductibles

Reimbursement is the percentage of your bill that Spot will pay if you file a claim. You can choose between 70%, 80%, and 90% reimbursement. Naturally, a higher reimbursement percentage means a higher premium as well.

In addition to your reimbursement percentage, you can choose an annual deductible from $100 to $1000. Your deductible is the amount you will need to pay out of pocket for all expenses before you can start filing claims with Spot. Having a higher deductible lowers your monthly payment.

Benefit Limits

You can set your upper limit for vet fee coverage from $2500/year to unlimited. Choosing a higher limit will increase your monthly payment. There are no per-incident caps on coverage, meaning that your entire annual coverage limit can go to any incident that Spot can cover.

This is unusually flexible for a pet insurance provider: most companies have caps per condition in addition to an overall limit.

Waiting Periods

There is a waiting period of 14 days after coverage begins. The waiting period applies to all claim types.

Claims and Service

To file a claim, simply log in to the Spot portal and select the type of claim you would like to file. To speed up the process, you can send along the records from your veterinarian. Alternatively, send Spot the bill, and Spot will contact your vet directly to ask for documents. Be advised that claims processing can take anywhere from 2-4 weeks, and you are responsible for the upfront cost of the bill in the meantime.

What Pet Parents Might Like

Spot keeps things simple with a single waiting period for all conditions and a single annual limit of your choosing, regardless of incident type. There are also no upper limits for pet age, though your coverage will be more expensive for an older pet. Spot also offers a 10% discount if you insure multiple pets.

Something To Consider

According to some reviews on TrustPilot, customers have issues with Spot taking a long time to respond or its customer service department being difficult to reach.

According to Spot's customer service team, claims can take 2-4 weeks to process on average. You will be responsible for paying all fees upfront in the meantime, with no guarantee that your claim will eventually be approved. So, when using Spot, expect fair treatment and flexible coverage, but long wait times in some cases.

To Sum Up

Spot offers coverage with few limits. There are no limits for specific conditions, and when you apply you can set the overall annual coverage limit as high as you want, or even make it unlimited. Just be prepared to pay the bill upfront, as a claim with Spot takes 2-4 weeks to resolve. Overall, if you want to insure your cat or dog against a broad range of conditions, Spot’s coverage is an excellent option.
