At a Glance

With attractive multi-pet discounts and up to 90% reimbursement on vet bills, Embrace Pet Insurance could be an excellent choice if you’re looking for dog or cat insurance at an affordable price. As well as providing 24/7 access to veterinary experts, it allows you to submit claims and manage your account through its full-service mobile app. Furthermore, the company offers an additional wellness plan for your pet’s routine and preventative medical needs.

Embrace Pet Insurance’s Key Figures

Annual Coverage : From $5,000-$30,000

Reimbursement : Up to 90%

Deductibles : From $200-$1,000

Waiting Periods : 2 days for accidents, 14 days for illness, 6 months for orthopedic conditions (dogs only)

Pros

  • 10% multi-pet discount
  • 5% discount for military personnel
  • 24/7 access to veterinary professionals
  • Additional wellness plan available

Cons

  • Dogs and cats only
  • 6 month waiting period for orthopedic coverage

One of Embrace’s most attractive features is that the company offers discounts on its premiums for those with more than one pet, and to former and current military personnel. If you’re seeking further peace of mind about your pet’s health, you can also benefit from 24/7 access to qualified veterinary staff and an additional pet wellness plan.

When insuring a dog, you’ll need to wait 6 months before claiming for orthopedic conditions, although it is possible to reduce this to 14 days with a medical exam. Likewise, you’ll also need to look elsewhere if you require coverage for more exotic animals.

What’s Covered?

The company will cover your pet against the following illness (if not prexisting), accidents, and emergencies.

  • Hospitalization/surgery
  • Cancer
  • Broken bones/orthopedic complaints
  • Chronic issues
  • Prosthetics/mobility devices
  • Complementary care/rehabilitation
  • Hereditary, breed-specific, and congenital conditions
  • Dental illnesses
  • Broken teeth
  • Behavioral therapy
  • Prescription medications
  • Parasites
  • Diagnostic exams

I was also pleased to see that the company offers a wellness plan as these are not available through all providers. This includes:

  • Wellness exam fees
  • Vaccinations
  • Grooming
  • Microchipping
  • Prescription diet food and more

What’s Not Covered?

If you take out a policy, the following exclusions will apply:

  • Pre-existing conditions
  • Routine care (unless you take out a wellness plan)
  • Injuries or illness caused by fighting, racing, cruelty, or neglect
  • Pregnancy, breeding, and whelping
  • Cosmetic procedures
  • DNA testing/cloning
  • Avian flu/nuclear war

Like most pet insurance, Embrace doesn’t cover any pre-existing conditions your pet has when you take out a policy. However, the company will only review the past 12 months of your pet’s medical history when you do this.

As Embrace doesn’t operate through a specific network of vets, you can choose any vet or emergency care specialist.

Insurance Plans & Pricing

Embrace offers both accident and illness coverage, and accident-only coverage on its standard plans. You can also purchase an additional wellness plan, which will reimburse you for everyday and preventative care.

The amount of your premiums will depend on factors such as your pet’s age and breed, as well as your zip code.

When I entered the details of a two-year-old mixed breed female cat with a New York zip code, I received a quote of $23.05 per month for accident and illness coverage. This assumed a reimbursement limit of $5,000, a deductible of $500, and reimbursement rate of 70%.

I then entered the details of a male four-year-old golden retriever dog with a San Francisco zip code and received a quote of $34.34 per month. This assumed a $15,000 reimbursement limit, a $750 deductible, and an 80% reimbursement.

**Note, these quotes were received in July 2022 and they may be subject to change. Likewise, your zip code will also affect any quotes you receive.

Reimbursements & Deductibles

When you take out a plan, you can select the reimbursement rate you’ll receive if you make a claim, which is the percentage of the claim’s total value your insurance will cover, with options being 70%, 80%, or 90%.

You’ll also need to select your deductible, which is the amount you’ll need to pay towards any claims before Embrace covers the remainders. Choices are $200, $300, $500, $750, and $1,000. If you choose a higher deductible, you’ll likely pay lower premiums.

I was also pleased to see that Embrace operates its deductibles on an annual basis. This means that you’ll only pay this amount once per year, rather than every time you make a claim.

Benefit Limits

You can choose a maximum annual reimbursement limit of $5,000, $8,000, $10,000, $15,000, or $30,000.

Waiting Periods

You’ll need to wait at least 14 days to file a claim relating to illnesses and 2 days in the case of accidents. When insuring a dog, you’ll need to wait 6 months before claiming for orthopedic conditions. However, you can reduce this to 14 days if your pet undergoes a vet exam.

Claims and Service

You can make a claim through Embrace’s app, over the phone, through fax, or in the mail. Although you won’t need to submit a claim form online or in the app, this is required with other methods. You’ll also need to provide an itemized invoice and details of the reasons for your visit.

Once, all claims information has been received, Embrace will process your covered claims within 10 to 15 business days. If you’ve signed up to direct deposits, your funds should arrive within 3 business days. Check payments typically take around 10 business days.

If you have a question about your policy, you can contact the company over phone or email.

Customer support hours are Monday-Friday, 9am-8pm (ET), and Saturday, 10am-2pm.

Something that I particularly like about Embrace is that it gives you 24/7 access to veterinary professionals though its partnership with PawSupport. Support is available over the phone, through live chat, or video conferencing.

When researching the company, Embrace’s website was very simple to navigate, and obtaining quotes took under 2 minutes.

What Pet Parents Might Like

One thing that I particularly like about Embrace is that it offers an app, which allows you to submit claims, check the status of existing claims, and update your policy.

You’ll also be pleased to note that the company offers 10% discounts if you add more than one pet to your policy, and provides a 5% discount if you have served, or currently serve, in the military.

Something To Consider

Although Embrace offers full accident and illness coverage to animals aged 14 years and younger, pets aged 15 and above are eligible for accident only coverage, but not eligible for new illness coverage. However, your insurance will continue if you enrolled your pet before its 15th birthday.

To Sum Up

With a wide range of coverage at affordable prices, Embrace Pet Insurance could provide you with excellent reassurance if you’re looking to protect your dog or cat. The company offers several attractive discounts that could significantly lower the cost of your insurance, including a multi-pet discount. Likewise, it also provides 24/7 access to qualified vet health professionals, which may provide invaluable peace of mind.
