  • Unlimited annual coverage available

  • Covers curable pre-existing conditions

Cons

  • No accident-only plan
  • Can’t pay your vet directly

Figo provides a great range of plans, deductibles, and reimbursement options for you to choose from. It may even reimburse costs incurred by curable pre-existing conditions, and you can customize your plan with additional wellness packages. Moreover, if you aren’t completely satisfied you can cancel your policy within 30 days and receive a full refund.

That said, it doesn’t currently offer accident-only plans, which are typically cheaper than inclusive plans. Additionally, it doesn’t pay vet bills directly, so you’ll have to cover all your vet costs upfront and then apply for reimbursement.

What’s Covered?

All of Figo’s plans are inclusive policies that cover a wide range of conditions and treatments. No matter which policy you choose you will receive coverage for the following costs:

  • Common illnesses and accidents
  • Emergency services and hospitalization
  • Cancer treatments including radiation and chemotherapy
  • Hereditary and congenital conditions
  • Prescription medicine
  • Hip dysplasia and knee conditions
  • Laboratory and diagnostic testing
  • Curable pre-existing conditions

What’s Not Covered?

Like most other insurers, Figo doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions—although it does make a distinction between curable and non-curable conditions. Additionally, it doesn’t cover cosmetic surgeries, experimental procedures, cloned pets and cloning procedures, or treatment for most parasites. Preventable therapies and treatments such as spaying and neutering, vaccinations, bloodwork, and prescription food aren’t covered under its standard policies but are available through one of its 3 wellness packages.

Insurance Plans & Pricing

Figo offers 3 different inclusive plans: Essential, Preferred, and Ultimate. All three policies cover the same conditions and treatments—the only difference between the three is their annual benefit limit. The pricing for each plan varies depending on your location, reimbursement rate, deductible, annual benefit, and your pet’s type, age, and breed.

For example, in Los Angeles, California the cost for a 1-year-old male Labrador Retriever with a $250 deductible and 80% reimbursement rate comes to $64.17 per month for the Essential plan, $74.87 per month for the Preferred plan, and $84.98 per month for the Ultimate plan. Conversely, in Tampa, Florida a 5-year-old female German Shepherd with 70% reimbursement and $500 deductible costs $29.65, $32.46, or $41.85 per month depending on your choice of the Essential, Preferred, or Ultimate plan. These quotes were effective as of September 19, 2022 and are subject to change.

If you have more than one pet, you can save 5% of your monthly premium by adding a second pet to your policy. Additionally, Costco members can receive up to 15% off the cost of their premium—although this offer is only available to certain members and in select states.

Reimbursements & Deductibles

With Figo, you can choose between a 70, 80, 90, or 100% reimbursement rate and an annual deductible of $100, $250, $500, or $750. A lower reimbursement rate qualifies you for a lower monthly premium. A lower deductible will increase your monthly premium.

Your coinsurance is equal to 100% minus your reimbursement rate, which is then applied and subtracted from your claims and counts toward your annual deductible. Once you meet your deductible, you’ll be reimbursed at your reimbursement rate up to your annual benefit limit.

Benefit Limits

Each Figo policy comes with an annual benefit limit with no per-incident caps, which means it doesn’t cap payments by condition type. You can choose between a $5,000, $10,000, or unlimited annual benefit, and you may decrease your coverage at any time.

Waiting Periods

Compared to many of its competitors, Figo offers some of the shortest waiting periods in the industry. Waiting periods vary by state, but coverage for accident-related expenses usually begins 1 day after your policy start date. Illnesses are covered after 14 days.

Meanwhile, the waiting period for orthopedic conditions is 6 months. However, the orthopedic waiting period can be waived if you submit a healthy orthopedic exam within the first 30 days of your policy period.

Claims and Service

Filing a claim with Figo is easy thanks to its online Pet Cloud portal. To submit a claim, simply log in to your Pet Cloud account from any device and upload your paid invoice and pet’s medical records. On average, Figo pays out claims within 3 business days.

If you have concerns about your pet’s health, Figo can connect you with live support from a vet 24/7 through its Pet Cloud portal. For non-medical assistance, you can reach out to Figo’s customer experience team via phone, chat, or email Monday-Friday between 7am-7pm CT, from 8am-6pm CT on Saturday, and 11am-3pm CT on Sunday. Please note, claims support is only available from 8am-5:30pm CT Monday-Friday.

Overall, Figo’s website is not difficult to navigate. To retrieve your custom quote simply provide your pet’s name, type, age, and breed, and your zip code and email. The whole process is quick and easy and takes less than 60 seconds.

What Pet Parents Might Like

One of the best things about Figo is that it makes a distinction between curable and non-curable pre-existing conditions. You may be able to receive reimbursement for medical costs related to a pre-existing, curable condition—as long as your pet receives a clean bill of health from a vet at least 12 months before your policy start date.

You’re also sure to like Figo’s 1-day waiting period for accident-related expenses, which is one of the shortest in the industry. Add that to the discounts it offers if you insure multiple pets—or for Costco members—and it’s easy to see how Figo can save you money on your vet bills.

Something To Consider

Before you choose Figo you should note that it does not offer accident-only policies, which typically offer more affordable premiums. Moreover, it does not pay claims directly, which means you’ll have to pay your vet costs upfront and then file for reimbursement.

To Sum Up

If you need insurance for your dog or cat, make sure to take a look at Figo before you decide on which provider is right for you. With its short waiting periods, quick claims process, and no per-incident caps, Figo can cover your pet against injury or illness and protect you from costly vet bills. Just remember that although Figo covers curable pre-existing conditions, not all conditions are covered and you may find cheaper policies if you want accident-only coverage.
